Understanding Telegram and Social Media Scams

Last updated on March 14, 2026

Social media platforms have become primary channels for scammers targeting cryptocurrency users. Telegram, Twitter (X), Discord, and other platforms host impersonation accounts, fake support channels, and fraudulent communities designed to steal credentials and assets.

This article explains how these scams operate and how to protect yourself

Why Social Media Scams Target Crypto Users

Social media creates the illusion of direct access. Users believe they can contact support, join official communities, or receive help through these channels. Scammers exploit this expectation.
The Structure of Social Media Scams:
Scammers do not hack accounts through technical means. They manipulate behavior. They create urgency, offer help, build trust, and then request information that grants account access.
Understanding this structure helps you recognize attacks before they succeed.

Telegram Scams

How Telegram Scams Work

Telegram allows anyone to create usernames, channels, and groups that appear official. Scammers create accounts that closely mimic legitimate platforms.

Common Telegram Scam Patterns:

Impersonation Accounts
Scammers create profiles with names like "Bitlease Support," "Bitlease Official," or "Bitlease Help Desk."

These accounts use:

  • Similar logos to the legitimate platform

  • Professional-looking profile descriptions

  • Links to fake websites

  • Verification checkmarks (Telegram Premium feature, not official verification)

Fake Support Groups
Scammers create Telegram groups named "Bitlease Official Support" or "Bitlease Community." These groups contain fake members (often bots) who appear to receive help successfully.

Auto-Response Bots
When you mention an issue in a legitimate crypto community, scammers' bots automatically detect keywords and send direct messages offering assistance.

Red Flags in Telegram Communications

Unsolicited Direct Messages
Legitimate platform support does not initiate contact through Telegram DMs. If someone messages you first claiming to be support, this is a scam.

Requests for Screen Sharing
Scammers ask to view your screen via apps like AnyDesk or TeamViewer. They claim this helps diagnose issues. Once connected, they can see everything you type, including passwords.

Seed Phrase or Private Key Requests
Any request for your recovery phrase, private keys, or similar security information is fraudulent. No legitimate service needs this information.

Payment Demands
Scammers claim you need to pay a fee to:

  • Unlock your account

  • Verify your identity

  • Process a withdrawal

  • Upgrade your account tier

Legitimate platforms do not operate this way.

Urgency and Fear
"Your account will be permanently closed in 2 hours."
"We detected suspicious activity, act now."
"Immediate verification required."

This manufactured urgency bypasses rational judgment.

How to Verify Legitimate Telegram Channels

Bitlease's official website lists verified social media accounts. Check there before trusting any Telegram channel.

Verification Steps:

  1. Go directly to bitlease.com

  2. Locate official social media links (usually in the footer or contact section)

  3. Click only these verified links

  4. Bookmark verified channels

  5. Never search for channels independently and trust the results

Protecting Yourself on Telegram

Disable Auto-Download
Settings > Data and Storage > Automatic Media Download
Set all options to "Never."

This prevents malicious files from downloading automatically.

Adjust Privacy Settings
Settings > Privacy and Security

  • Who can see my phone number: Nobody

  • Who can add me to groups: My Contacts

This limits scammers' ability to find and contact you.

Never Click Unknown Links
Links in Telegram messages can lead to:

  • Phishing websites that steal credentials

  • Malware downloads

  • Fake wallet connection pages

Twitter (X) Scams

Impersonation Accounts

Scammers create accounts that mimic the official Bitlease presence.

Common Tactics:

Similar Usernames
@Bitlease_Official vs @Bit1ease_Official (number "1" instead of letter "l")
@BitleaseSupport vs @Bitlease_Help

Copied Profile Elements
Scammers copy:

  • Profile pictures

  • Banner images

  • Bio text

  • Pinned tweets

The account looks identical to the legitimate one.

Fake Verification Badges
Some scammers use symbols that resemble verification checkmarks (✓), but are not official Twitter verification.

Reply Scams
When the legitimate Bitlease account tweets, scammers immediately reply impersonating support. These replies appear near the top of comments, creating the illusion of official communication.

Giveaway and Airdrop Scams

The Pattern:

Scammers post messages like: "🎉 Bitlease is celebrating 100K users! Send 0.1 BTC to this address and receive 1 BTC back!

Or: "To claim your airdrop, connect your wallet at [fake website]."

Why This Works:
The promise of free money overrides skepticism. Users send cryptocurrency to the listed address or connect wallets to malicious sites.

Reality:
Legitimate platforms never ask you to send cryptocurrency to receive more. This structure only exists in scams.

Fake Customer Support

When you tweet about an issue with Bitlease, multiple fake support accounts respond:

"Hello! We can help. Please DM us your account details."

These accounts have similar names and profile pictures to the legitimate account.

Protection:

Never accept support help initiated through social media. Always contact support through official channels:

  • Log in to bitlease.com

  • Navigate to Settings > Support

  • Submit a ticket there

Discord Scams

Server Impersonation

Scammers create Discord servers with names like "Bitlease Official" or "Bitlease Community."

Indicators of Fake Servers:

Suspicious Member Count
If the legitimate Bitlease has 50,000 Discord members, a server with 500 members claiming to be official is fraudulent.

Low Activity
Fake servers often have many members but little conversation. Scammers use bots to inflate member counts.

Immediate DMs
Upon joining, you receive direct messages from "moderators" or "support" offering help. Legitimate servers do not operate this way.

Moderator Impersonation

Scammers create accounts with "Mod" or "Admin" tags that look official but have no actual server permissions.

They send DMs: "We noticed an issue with your account. Please verify here: [fake link]"

Verification:
Real moderators have colored names and role badges visible in the server member list. They do not initiate DMs about account issues.

Fake Bot Commands

Scammers create bots that claim to provide account information or support.

Commands like: !verify - Links to phishing site
!balance - Requests credentials
!support - Opens fake ticket system

Legitimate platform bots do not request credentials or ask you to visit external sites for verification.

General Social Media Protection

Verify Before Trusting

For Every Social Media Account:

  1. Check if listed on the official Bitlease website

  2. Verify follower count (scam accounts have fewer followers)

  3. Review post history (scam accounts recently created)

  4. Check verification status (official platforms have verification badges)

Never:

  • Trust accounts that DM you first

  • Click links in unsolicited messages

  • Share credentials through social media

  • Send cryptocurrency to "verify" your account

Official Communication Channels

Bitlease support operates through:

These are the only channels where you should discuss account-specific issues.

Social media accounts (if they exist) provide:

  • Platform updates

  • Feature announcements

  • Educational content

They do not:

  • Request personal information

  • Ask for credentials

  • Initiate DMs about account issues

  • Request payments

What to Do If You Encounter a Scam

Do Not Engage
Do not argue with scammers. Do not try to warn them, you know it is a scam. Simply block and report.

Report the Account
Use platform reporting tools:

  • Telegram: Long-press account > Report

  • Twitter: Click three dots > Report

  • Discord: Right-click username > Report

Warn Bitlease
Email security@bitlease.com with:

  • Screenshots of the scam account

  • Links to fake channels or websites

  • Description of the scam attempt

This helps Bitlease issue warnings and pursue takedown requests.

If You Already Shared Information

Credentials Shared:

  1. Change your Bitlease password immediately

  2. Enable 2FA if not already active

  3. Contact support@bitlease.com

  4. Monitor the account for unauthorized activity

Payment Sent:

  1. Contact support@bitlease.com immediately

  2. Provide transaction details

  3. File a report with local law enforcement

  4. Document all communication with the scammer

Cryptocurrency sent to external addresses cannot typically be recovered. Act quickly to prevent additional losses.
